The Wifey and I are great big fans of improv, but as we've learned in the past it can be very (very) hit or miss. During a past Improv adventure the poor troupe got trapped in a depressing couple-therapy skit that they just could not get themselves out of. But then again, in the same night, we were also treated to another troupe that had us rolling around with full-on belly-achin' laughs. Just goes to show: improv is very difficult, and my hat goes off to the folks that can pull it off well!
So that said, Wifey and I do not give up easily and we'll take up any good chance to see an improv show if we can. It was with that in mind that I managed to find ComedySportz LA while digging through pages and pages of yelp suggestions for Date Night. The idea is simple - it's still improv, but it's run as a kind-of sport between improv teams. The purpose of adding this competitive edge into it is that it really helps keep the hilarity to a maximum. If anything starts getting awkward or weird, the ref blows a whistle and the team (or the audience, if the audience had a "foul") would get penalized. This, then, makes for a show that is almost *guaranteed* to be belly-rolls of laughter! So tickets were bought and we went off to the theater located somewhere deep in Hollywood.
Upon arrival we were introduced to the rules, which were (in short): If the teams perform poorly (dirty jokes, lame jokes, etc) they get penalized by way of point deduction (the teams compete for points). If an audience member acts poorly (dirty jokes, heckling, etc), they get penalized by way of brown paper bag over the head. Which, mind you, happened to one audience member who suggested something about being "brown in the pants"! He got the brown-paper-bag treatment, to the great amusement of everyone else.
The show itself was an absolute riot! As can be expected, the ref helped move things along, the teams played well with one another, and the jokes were great fun. It almost makes you want to join a Comedy Improv Troupe! We only saw the one show there put up by the College Teams, but it was high quality entertainment and a great barrel of laughs. Even two little kids from the audience got to participate in a way that made the entire experience even funnier but also endearing in a way.
I want to give Comedy Sportz LA so much more of my money, they deserve every penny. I'm definitely planning on making it out there again.

It sounds like a good time. How expensive is it and do you need reservations? I think deb would love to see something like this since we have both tried our hands at stage acting and improv. We will be out that way in August.
ReplyDelete@Ant: It's super cheap, $10pp! The refreshments are a little on the pricier end ($3 for a bottle of soda), but overall leaps & bounds cheaper than an average movie night out.
ReplyDeleteYou can buy tickets at the location, but we bought them online. Check out ticket & show schedule at: http://comedysportzla.com/shows/show-schedule.html
Hope that helps =)
