3rd Street Promenade

We've been to the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade several times in the past.  It's a nice strip of shops, restaurants, street musicians, and ... not much more I don't think.  Oh, and the Pier a little more to the south, but other than that not a tremendous amount of stuff to do.

Since we haven't had a night of strolling and people watching in a while, we were torn:  3rd  Street or Art Walk?  After a few moments of intense discussion we landed on 3rd Street --- we definitely haven't explored SM in many moons and we've been told some "new shops" have popped up in the big mall itself.

So off 3rd Street we go!  ... Only to quickly realize that we were by-and-large not really interested in the shops at the mall.  And 3rd Street itself is kinda meh at 8 o'clock at night.  But luckily people are fun to watch, and we were watching!

Among others, we saw a bu.. er.. transient .. wearing a white taxi-cab sign affixed to a construction helmet.  Which was both unnerving and exciting.  We saw a teenager who told her friend "This mall's poppin'!", much to our great amusement for two reasons:  The mall was definitely not "poppin'", and who the heck still says "poppin"?!  Crazy teens.

There was also this old dude totally jivin' to the beat of a young afro-punk's drumming (the kid brought out his entire set as was going crazy on it).  We weren't really sure if the old guy was part of the act, stoned, or "other" ... but he was entertaining to watch and made you really want to join his acid trip.  We, uh, moved on :)

As the night continued we decided to dip into our old standby: Barnes & Noble, where we picked up a finger-puppet craft kit!  We raced home, excited to make some finger puppets and connect with our inner child!  Upon arriving home we took a shower and immediately went to bed.  Turns out our inner child is easily overwhelmed by our outer tired adult.

Oh well.  Fun night anyhow filled with a grand assortment of crazy, weird, and interesting people! :)
