Curling up with comics... boo-yah!

Written by Wifey.

Ahhhh... remember being a kid, and eagerly heading to the comics shop to see what new issues came in? I'm more of a superhero fan (had a huge crush on Batman & Wolverine as a kid), while Hubby loves more of the standalone sci-fi/fantasy stories. So, for this week's date night we headed over to Dream World Comics. Now, this comic shop had an interesting array of mixed reviews on Yelp, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But hey, they're open late (until 9pm), so, that's one of the main criteria for a date night nowadays, lol. Plus, I figured if it was a crappy shop, it would make for that much more of an interesting experience. And it certainly was an interesting experience, but not because the shop was bad.

Dream World Comics is on a quiet unassuming corner, with windows filled with figurines and memorabilia. We walked in about half hour before closing, and started to explore. We made as far as the New Arrivals display, when suddenly the guy at the counter looked up and told us: "Hey... we're closing up." Ummm... okay? "Cash only". Ummmm... that's okay too? We asked for a few earlier issues of some series, chitchatted about some of the graphic novels displayed, and then, Hubby got the guy's attention. Hubby explained that it's been awhile since he followed any particular series, and was looking for some good dark stories to get into. Suddenly, the guy started pulling a big pile of comics, grabbing a variety of different series, and handed them to Hubby. "Here, for you... take 'em, free. How else are you going to figure out what you like?". Whoa. Freakin' cool. In addition to the $30 worth of comics we'd already decided to buy, he must have given us at least another $30 worth of free comics. SWEET! After that, we just chatted with the guy for awhile, as he closed up, and ended up walking out with him and his wife. Turns out, he's the owner, and from what we can tell, he just loves his job, and introducing people to new series & comics. We were so impressed with the experience that we're already making plans to return next week for some of the books that he didn't have in stock yet. That, and I want to actually take the time to explore his shop some more, including the famed "Bat Cave", lol.

After that, we quickly grabbed some dinner, and then made a beeline for bed, with our giant pile of comics between us, and happily delved into worlds of vampyres, superheroes, apocalypses, and more. Being married to a fellow geek is awesome!! :-p
