Hubby & Wife start their Date Night tradition...

Posted by Wifey:

Hubby and I met in college, during an Artificial Intelligence class.  After recognizing each other's geek soulmate, we got married and will soon be celebrating our 5th anniversary.  We've always been pretty lovey dovey, but about a year ago we realized that while we went out plenty, it had been awhile since our last "date" - it was more like just 2 people hanging out.  And then there was the added problem of our geek-hood... both of us are highly addicted to our email, facebook, etc, and often times we'd be sitting in the movie theatre, each staring at our smartphones (Hubby has the iPhone, and I have the Motorola Droid).  Not really quality couple time!  So, we started a weekly Date Night, after laying down a few simple ground rules.
  •  Every Wed (now Thurs) would be Date Night.  We'd take turns planning it, but while Date Night could be re-scheduled, it could not be canceled.
  • No email, no phones, and no computers.  The focus is on us!
Pretty simple, and actually easier to follow than we expected!  Over the past year, our Date Nights have ranged from a simple dinner & a movie, to more creative evenings.  We've even had a few "Date Days", like checking out a local museum.  Some of our Date Nights:
  • Decorating Gingerbread houses, and then posting them on facebook to see who had the better one (Hubby did)
  • Trying a new restaurant in town, like the new Brazilian Gourmet Pizza place, "Bella Vista".
  • Camping... in our living room.  Turns out, Hubby had never made s'mores before (I know, scandalous!!), so I set up the tent in the living room, stuck a few logs in the bbq on the patio, and we munched on s'mores while watching "Marley & Me". (very sweet movie btw!)
  • Game night with a good bottle of wine and some Thai food delivery (mango & sticky rice, yuuummmm!)
  • Checking out a dive bar nearby that we've always seen, but never bothered to go.  And now it's one of our fav local hangouts, complete with Karaoke!
  • Creating camera "art" down at the beach.  Put on a slow shutter speed, and twirl around a flashlight (or in our case, a cellphone) in a pattern, and see the neat results!!
You get the picture... our date nights are rather varied! :-p

Anyway, one of our friends suggested we start documenting our Date Nights, and well... here we are!  We've never really tried the blogging thing before, but I figure, meh, what the heck.  At the very least, we hope it provides some inspiration to other couples, or at least a bit of amusement!  Feel free to provide feedback! :-)

  2. lol... we're not strong enough to leave the cellphones at home. instead, we just make a rule not to use them (no games, reading email, etc)
